-
The most spectacular areas are those under the
protection of the Peak District National Park to the west
-
The
'Dark Peak', crowned by Kinder Scout at 2,088 feet, is an area
of impressive gritstone moor and colourful, bleak and beautiful
heather and bracken
-
Further
south, the 'White Peak' is an area of impressive limestone cliffs
and gentle, unspoiled dales, supporting a varied and interesting
wildlife
-
The
whole area is peppered with attractive towns and friendly villages,
and many Peakland villages, have an annual 'Well Dressing',
in which wells are garlanded with beautiful floral designs as
a thanks-giving for unpolluted water
-
The
Peak District is a mecca for ramblers, birdwatchers and nature-lovers
of all kinds; its moors, edges and dales provide a rich variety
of habitat for all to enjoy
-
The area is full of interesting monuments and buildings ranging
from Arbor Low, a stone circle of 46 stones dating from about
2,000 BC, to the famous crooked spire of St Mary and All Saints
church, Chesterfield
-
The
great homes of Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, with the art treasures,
gardens and fine interiors, are a constant draw for visitors
- At
the Tramway Museum at Crich, you can still ride the 'last Sheffield
tram'
