Sheffield
is home to the largest theatres complex outside London, comprising
the world famous Crucible and Lyceum theatres and the Crucible
Studio Theatre
- The
Crucible is one of the leading repertory companies in the country,
and received the Barclays Theatre of the Year award 2001
- The
Lyceum stages many touring drama, dance and opera productions
- The
Crucible Studio is home to the Lindsays String Quartet and their
International Chamber Music Festival
- There
are another four smaller theatres in Sheffield - the Merlin, Montgomery
and Library Theatres and the University of Sheffield Drama Studio
- Over
the summer,air performances can be found in the Botanical
Gardens and in the Peak District
- Sheffield
has over 50 cinema screens in five cinemas
- Three
multiplexes and a megaplex are complemented by the independent
Showroom cinema which combines four screens with a café and bar
in the centre of the City's cultural quarter
- The
Showroom is the largest independent cinema complex outside London
and shows a wide range of domestic, foreign, art house and independent
films, and in February 2002 was voted Guardian readers' favourite
independent cinema in the country
