More than 1700 jobs will be created when a top American computer
firm sets up its £70m European headquarters in Sheffield, it
was announced today.
Insight Enterprises Inc has chosen Attercliffe over other European
locations and says it is looking for local people to fill key
positions.
The company, rated among the 100 fastest growing businesses
in the USA markets computer hardware and designs software.
Work will begin early next year to convert the former Pulse
and Vogue nightclubs on Attercliffe Road into a new futuristic
85 000 square foot flagship headquarters.
The Company hopes to move in within 12 months while it sets
to work on a further 75 000 square foot office on adjacent empty
land as business develops.
Insight has also bought the nearby Players Café to use as a
staff restaurant and internet café.
Insight executive vice-president Kirby Myers dismissed fears
of a global economic downturn in the wake of the New York atrocity
and the expected retaliation against terrorists. He said: "
When something like this happens in the world you either shut
down or continue with life as far as normal. I am confident
the world will return to business as usual. We are delighted
to have found an excellent site which offers us the opportunity
to develop a world class operation in Sheffield."
Sheffield Council says the deal - the biggest ever inward investment
in the Yorkshire and Humber area - proves the city has the expertise
to attract big business. The development, brokered by Sheffield
First for Investment and regional development agency Yorkshire
Forward, has been heralded as a huge breakthrough by Sheffield
Council leader Peter Moore.
Insight has already started recruiting and is set to approach
Sheffield's Universities in a bid to tap into graduate expertise
for top jobs.
