Sheffield
- one of the best places for research in Britain
The
recently released results of the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise
(RAE) have reinforced Sheffield's reputation of academic excellence.
Every five years the RAE assesses the quality of the research being
undertaken in every subject area in higher education institutions
across the country. Each submitted department is awarded a grade
from 1 (the lowest) to 5* (the highest)
The University of Sheffield had 73 per cent (35 out
of 48) of the University's subject areas rated in the top two grades
of assessment acknowledging research with a worldwide reputation.
The University of Sheffield now ranks 6th for academic research
quality in the country. The University is one of the most highly
rated research institutions for biological subjects; 5* ratings
were awarded to Animal and Plant Sciences, Biomedical Science, and
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
Sheffield Hallam maintained its place as the premier 'new' university
for research; three of the 19 departments submitted were judged
to produce research of international calibre (5 and 5* ratings).
The 5 rating in Art and Design has also firmly established Sheffield
Hallam as the leading research centre for art and design in the
Midlands and the North.
Sheffield
- the best place to study in Britain
The
Times recently rated the University of Sheffield as the number one
university in the country, and Sheffield Hallam University as the
number two of the 'new' universities (the wave of former polytechnics
that became universities in 1992).
In addition, the millennium edition of the Virgin
'Alternative Guide to British Universities' recently declared Sheffield
the destination of choice for the country's students. The guide,
uniquely written by students with first hand experience, rated the
University of Sheffield as the best location for students based
on an assessment of teaching quality, graduate employment records,
student satisfaction, the city and university social scene and local
facilities and amenities. The perfect score given to the city for
social activities means that Sheffield is now acknowledged as the
best place to study in the country.
