There
are 12 Higher Education institutions in the region, and over the
academic year 1998/9 the language components taken as part of HE
courses was equal to 2,551 full time equivalent (FTE) students,
giving the region the second highest proportion of FTE students
nationally, behind Greater London.
The largest majority of named and named part language degree provision
is in French, German and Spanish, although a wider range of European,
Middle and Far Eastern languages is available.
Sheffield
Hallam University

The
University Language Scheme offers all students the opportunity to
study a language as part of, or as a supplement to their degree,
from beginners to advanced level. In 2001 SHU had 800 students studying
on this scheme. The languages offered include French, German, Spanish,
Italian, Chinese and Japanese.
In addition, there are a further 280 undergraduate students at SHU
studying languages as part of one of the following dual degrees:
Languages with International Business Studies
Languages with
Marketing
International
Business Studies and Languages
Languages with
Tourism
Students study two languages, at least one from advanced level.
One semester is spent studying abroad, and a further year working
in Europe in a placement relevant to both subjects studied on the
course.
